This chapter examines the case of Rijeka as a multilingual and contested city and, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as a city between different sovereignties and nationalities. The aim of the chapter is to discuss some of the aspects of these rich and contested legacies and narratives, focusing on material and non-material ways in which they have been portrayed and represented in local iconographies, as in secular iconoclastic attitudes by local players or ruling powers.
