The paper analyzes two Virgilian variants attested in Servius, ad Aen. 11, 243 (Diomedem) and ad Aen. 12, 701 (Athon). The aim is to show how the need to explain a grammatical rule sometimes influences the commentator – but it’s possible to identify the same perspective in Macrobius –, who chooses a lesson consistent with it.
