The necropolis of Porta Marina Sud, dating to the 1st-2nd century AD, is the widest burial area explored at Velia. Funerary enclosures and individual tombs, related to different types and rituals, were irregularly arranged outside the fortifications and along the ancient coastline. The necropolis developed in a significant period for Velia, characterized by intense building activity, both public and private, and social transformations. The paper proposes a framework of the archaeological evidences, also concerning the anthropological and palaeopathological analyses still in progress, which give interesting data on the Velia’s inhabitants in the early Imperial age.
