Il terremoto di Casamicciola del 1883: norme antisismiche e cupole tra storia e struttura

The earthquake of August 21th, 2017 recalled the disastrous earthquake of 1883, which canceled Ischia's cultural and economic balance. The tragic event touched the whole world: the sad news was reported by national and international magazines. Beyond Casamicciola the most affected centers were Lacco Ameno and Forio. After the reconstruction the morphological character of this spontaneous architecture changed. Extrados vaults, loggias, arches, protruding bodies were denied by the anti-seismic regulations, because too fragile in the event of an earthquake. In addition, even the typical buildings that characterized the ancient Piazza Maio were left as ruins or rebuilt elsewhere, such as the ancient church of Santa Maria Maddalena. The loss of the typical characteristics of Mediterranean architecture is easily demonstrated: in fact there is no church with an extrados dome in the territory of Casamicciola.
