Abstract

The level of ecological and social performance to be achieved in town planning is not established by law but rather depends on the individual sensitivity of designers and decision-makers. However, urban renewal pilot projects in northern Europe have shown that a significant increase in sustainability is achievable with urban-scale projects. Some institutions have tried to promote these experiences in Mediterranean metropolises, but the prevailing dimension of infighting causes them to collapse in on themselves. The SuMMet Research Project is aimed at promoting the forms and processes of the socio-ecological regeneration of Mediterranean metropolises. It shows that bottom-up practices in which the collaboration of stakeholders is not limited to participating in the project but includes the co-management of the regenerated city are effective in overcoming the conflicts that typically occur in the implementation of most innovative BMPs in these areas.
