This article aims to describe the meanings, processes and mechanisms that made Diego Armando Maradona a symbol and an identity reference point for the Neapolitan fan community. It is a form of sporting heroism which, on the basis of particular football achievements and merits, has produced emotional and symbolic gratifications through which fans experience their belonging, even within different contentious dimensions. The new generations of fans also seem to have internalized, albeit with some specificity, these strong identity ingredients, allowing us to reflect on an effective transmission of memory.
