Abstract. This paper proposes the firststeps and subsequent developments ofan experimental approach – through theactions carried out by the Reggio CalabriaOperational Unit in the “Re-Cycle Italy”PRIN1 and developed in further subsequentresearch – aimed at regenerating the degradedlandscapes2 in the urban margin areasof the “horizontal city” in Southern Italy.The result of the research is a proposal ofa settlement model in which to hypothesisean “ecological transition”. From the “horizontalcity” that exploits primary resourcesand produces urban waste and fragile territories,to a model of “metropolis landscape”that is based on modern widely shared principlesof urban recycling, sustainable development,sharing and participation, circulareconomy and the care of the landscape.
