The nicknames show the relationship between inhabitants and territory, and give a glimpse of the microeconomy within the ‘restricted’ urban networks: more transparent than surnames, with their connotative function nicknames identifies the relationship between the individual and the group. In some cases, nicknames led to a sort of parallel registry office (e.g. in Chioggia, to a lesser extent in Forio d’Ischia). These nicknames, whose ‘motivations’ will be discussed, allow to describe the city through its inhabitants, preserving both natural and anthropic signs of time.
