The text is about the archaeological city of Pompeii, a site included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and among the best known in the world which, only in 2023, reached 4 million visitors. The ancient city is investigated for its formal, rather than documentary, qualities, which highlight a close relationship between the form of the house, the form of the insula as urban elementary part, and the general form of the city. Immersed in recent and disorderly urbanisation, Pompeii poses some problems of use not only due to its fragility but also due to the accessibility system which appears rather inadequate. In recent decades, important projects have been concentrated on the southern edge of the archaeological enclosure - by Renzo Piano and Peter Eisenman among others - always within the hypothesis of increasing flows through strengthening the infrastructure that links Pompeii to Naples and from here to many other locations. A more recent hypothesis, however, developed by the authors on the occasion of an international workshop, tries to restore an above all architectural dignity to the southern access system and to work on the area in-between the ancient and the contemporary citiy in order to guarantee better services for tourists but also to return some public spaces to the inhabitants of Pompeii.

Abstract
A more recent hypothesis, however, developed by the authors on the occasion of an international workshop, tries to restore an above all architectural dignity to the southern access system and to work on the area in-between the ancient and the contemporary citiy in order to guarantee better services for tourists but also to return some public spaces to the inhabitants of Pompeii.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
