Protection and Conservation of the Archaeological Heritage Between the two Wars: the Activity of Amedeo Maiuri in Naples The present paper aims to read the activity of Amedeo Maiuri, archaeologist, superintendent of antiquities in Naples between 1924 and 1961 from the particular point of view of the activity carried out in the field of protection and restoration of the archaeological heritage in the years of the fascist regime. This aspect of the long career of the Neapolitan superintendent still remains less studied, especially with reference to the first two decades of activity in Naples, which coincide with a dictatorial government that laid the foundations of its legitimacy in archaeology and in the reinterpretation of the myth of ancient Rome, but which also saw substantial cultural and scientific progress in the methods of approach to the protection and conservation of cultural heritage. In particular, Amedeo Maiuri's attention to the criteria and methods of architectural restoration, applied to archaeological sites, deserves a dutiful in-depth study, especially in light of the extensive action in the field that has strongly characterized the current layout of most of the archaeological sites in Campania.
