Since the introduction of modern seismic resistance criteria, the design of “industrial” steel buildings in Italy did not consider specific requirements to obtain ductile failure modes. Furthermore, the structural contributions from envelope panels (both cladding and roofing) were commonly neglected (and they are still neglected), thus gaining simplifications in the structural analysis for design purposes. However, (i) non-ductile local failure modes can propagate at global level reducing safety margins against earthquake-induced global collapse and, (ii) the envelope panels’ contribution to the structural response could be not negligible. Therefore, in this paper the seismic response of “typical” non-residential steel buildings is analyzed with a focus on: (i) the relationship between the design structural scheme and the non-linear behavior up to global collapse, (ii) the contribution from the “non-structural” envelope system to the structural response to seismic actions.

Abstract
