The permittivity of the bath medium in MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is optimized to improve the RF magnetic (B1) field distribution of the system, and ultimately the image quality. Among the permittivity values used in the optimization process, we found that the permittivity ϵ = 35 provides the maximum SNR and transmit efficiency. Compared to the fluid bath of water, the optimum permittivity provides an average increase of SNR of about 170% and transmit efficiency of about 162% in the brain.
