Abstract

The examination of knowledge of Latin literary papyrology and a critical evaluation of its nature of ‘instrument’ for education in the bilingual (or multilingual) reality of the Eastern Provinces, together with a deeper consideration of the mechanisms in the impliedtextual transmission, could be the basis of a modern approach to a particular kind of manuscript tradition. The paper is an in-depth examination of the status of Latin literary papyrology: a full picture of all the Latin literary papyri is given, trying to enlighten the way in which these texts could ‘enter’ a critical apparatus and how a ‘Latin papyri’s Philology’ could exist. In the last years, indeed, the Mario Capasso’s Cornelius Gallus, new studies about the so-called Bellum Actiacum in PHerc. 817, new perspectives in researches concerning Virgilian bilingual papyri and the recent corpora of Sallust and Livy’s papyri by Rodolfo Funari have given important contributions in the field of Latin literary papyri; but there still much to be done. The attention here will be focused on Virgilian papyri in order to problematize how the papyrological datum has been acquired in the process of Virgilian recensio by editorslike Arthus Stanley Pease, Roger Minors, Mario Geymonat, GianBiagio Conte.
