In a world continuously experiencing socio-cultural, political and economic upheavals which have challenged traditional ways of life, intercultural integration has a major role to play in promoting social cohesion and peaceful coexistence. In particular, intercultural education could/should make a significant contribution to tolerant societies. Accordingly, the Council of Europe has been developing different projects with a particular focus on ‘what needs to be done’ in Europe in order to encourage dialogue between different cultures, while respecting cultural and religious plurality (among them EDUMIGROM, YIP-PEE and ACCEPT PLURALISM projects). Significant educational difficulties for migrant pupils have also been taken into account, as shown by international tests (PISA and PIRLS tests). These results represent a challenge not only for education systems, but for European societies as well, since they perpetuate exclusion and undermine social cohesion. Next EU steps are highlighted.
