During the early modern age, missionary initiatives of popular preachers used to take into consideration the dangers of piracy, the capture of Christian ships and the enslavement of Christian sailors, the conversion of unbelievers, the relationship with the stranger. This happened in particular in the most prosperous and active port cities. This essay aims to focus on the interconnections among missionary strategies, control of urban spaces, policies of hospitality or hostility to minorities. The activity of the Jesuits in 17th and 18th century Naples has been chosen as case study.
