Through the concept of bovarysm J. de Gaultier contributed to the sociological and psychological definition of modern human beings. The increasing civilization and the consequent democratization of experiences and lifestyles contributed to the development of the human faculty to think of oneself as different from how one is. In this essay, the character of Madame Bovary becomes a pretext for analyzing the desires and frustrations of the modern individual in the face of the new horizons and new spheres of freedom produced by the sociocultural revolution.

Abstract
